A Message From Our Principal
“We are no longer defined by the country of our birth or the country in which we live, but rather by how confidently we uphold our ethics, morals and values in the face of a seemingly relentless bombardment of images, attitudes and ideologies. We therefore must ensure that our students are fully equipped to purposefully engage in the various challenges they will inevitably face.”
I embarked upon my career in the teaching profession as a Year 2 class teacher in an inner-city school in Lancaster in the North of England in 1995. This was a wonderful experience: hugely challenging and yet hugely rewarding. However, from my very earliest days as a teacher, I had a desire to live and teach abroad. (I had been deprived of sunshine while growing up in Scotland.fr) Consequently, after one year of teaching in the UK, I ventured to Kenya to undertake a Year 1 class teacher role at Premier Academy. Two years later I was teaching Common Entrance History and Games at Hillcrest Preparatory School. This was where I met my wife Zarah, who was also teaching there. Four years later I moved to Braeburn School in Lavington to take up the role of Pastoral Deputy Head. After three fantastic years at Braeburn, I was fortunate to take up the post of Head of Primary at Oporto British School (the oldest British International School in mainland Europe), in Portugal. Life in Porto was superb but both Zarah and I missed the vibrancy of life in Nairobi and so when the opportunity to return to Braeburn as the Head of Primary arose, I/we jumped at the chance. I spent a further nine amazing years working within the Braeburn Group of International Schools, including the last two years in Dar es Salaam, helping to establish and lead a new school in its first year.
The opportunity to take up the role of Principal at GEMS Cambridge Nairobi proved to be too compelling to decline. Having spent the last twenty years of my life (or thereabouts) in Nairobi, I feel very well equipped to take up the challenge of firmly establishing this school among the leading international schools in the country. As the GEMS community already knows, our facilities are second to none in Kenya, and indeed compare strongly with many leading schools around the world. Our ambition is to ensure that the standard of education, including extra and co-curricular opportunities, offered to our students is also world class. Our students deserve the very best teachers delivering outstanding teaching practice to ensure optimum learning opportunities and outcomes for all.
Academic rigour and success however is not the sole purpose of high-quality education, nor the sole responsibility of the teachers who deliver this. I am an extremely passionate advocate of holistic education, believing that schools carry the responsibility of encouraging their students to recognise, explore and develop their roles in global perspectives and therefore actively seek opportunities to contribute to the wider community by embodying the spirit of global citizenship. We are no longer defined by the country of our birth or the country in which we live, but rather by how confidently we uphold our ethics, morals and values in the face of a seemingly relentless bombardment of images, attitudes and ideologies. We therefore must ensure that our students are fully equipped to purposefully engage in the various challenges they will inevitably face.
Encouraging and developing robust emotional intelligence in our students is a significant responsibility that we must always prioritise alongside our responsibility to constantly challenge every individual to strive to achieve their very highest standards of academic success.
As those already in our community know, I am joined at GEMS Cambridge Nairobi by my wife Zarah and my daughters Aaliyah and Mischa, both of whom are thoroughly enjoying the numerous opportunities life at their new school is presenting.
Please take the time to explore our website and of course to contact the school directly should you have any queries or require any further information about us. We will be very happy to assist you.
